Hanga Woodcuts wood-cut block print A Hanga wood-cut is a Japanese method and technique for producing a wood-cut. It is a tradition that dates back almost 1000 years and has been refined to involve every step in producing this art form. From the original drawing to the final print on paper, each detail is executed in an exact way using Japanese hand made tools, each of which has a name. The cutting of the block of wood follows an ancient set of rules as does the chemistry of the inks and its application. There is no press involved and the printing is by hand. Each color is a separate wood block which must register together to make the completed print. |
